Dolf Gielen, Director of technology and innovation at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) presented his research about critical materials for the energy transition such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earths. He explained the fundamental chemistry of lithium ion batteries that power EV cars and detailed why the supply of these critical materials needs to be managed carefully to support the energy transition.
